A Day on Ganghwa Island

I went on a very spontaneous day trip with my friends over the weekend. We began the day with some Uzbekistan food in Dongdaemun. It was my first time at the restaurants in this area, and it was delicious. Everything tasted amazing. After the meal, we picked up some drinks at Starbucks and then hit the road.

The traffic was terrible, it seemed like everyone was trying to get out of Seoul for the day. It took about an hour and a half to get to Ganghwa Island. The weather was amazing that day, which was a pleasant surprise during the continuous monsoon season.

The first stop was Yeonmijeong Pavilion. It is a little lookout area from the island with a direct view of North Korea across the water. I could hear the other people visiting there trying to figure out where North Korea is. It was stunning there with the clouds reflecting off the water.

After looking around a bit, we drove to the dolmens. They are ancient burial sites that are marked by huge stones placed on one another. We came at the right time, because the sun was just setting so the open fields with the dolmens looked so peaceful.

Our last stop for the day was Joyangbangjik. It is a huge cafe that was once a factory. They use so many lights inside the place that I wonder how expensive the electricity bill is. It is probably one of my top favorite cafes I’ve ever been to. I was very impressed with the decor.

I was so happy that I had the opportunity to go to Ganghwa Island, because without a car it’s a bit difficult to go to places there. Thank you to the friend who did all that driving in the horrible traffic. I hope to go back and see more of the island another time!
